Housing affordability crucial for many Hughes MP Jenny Ware

JENNY WARE MP

HUGHES MP Jenny Ware talks about the Budget and housing affordability.

"Next week I return to Parliament for Budget Week. When Treasurer Jim Chalmers hands down his second Budget he has the opportunity to take real action to help reduce inflation and the pressures on Australian families and businesses.

"l have been out and about in the Hughes electorate holding mobile offices and hearing from our locals - individuals, families and small businesses about the current economic climate and what is important to them.

"The May Budget must provide a plan to address the cost of living crisis with real fiscal restraint. This Budget must deliver:

  • Fiscal restraint to take pressure off families by restoring the fiscal guardrails to instil budget discipline and return the Budget to balance.

  • Simpler and fairer taxes not higher ones. Labor must commit to the stage 3 tax cuts in full and reverse its decisions to raise taxes on superannuation and franking credits.

  • Real action on productivity to make small businesses and families lives easier.

  • A real plan to address Australia's energy crisis.

"Housing affordability remains a national crisis. Throughout the election campaign and every day since being elected, the people of Hughes are telling me that this is a priority for them.

"In my first speech in Parliament, I spoke of my commitment to addressing housing affordability.

"The Albanese Labor Government has the tools available to empower State and local governments to address housing supply. I am aware that in my electorate every night homeless teenagers are couch-surfing, men are sleeping in bus shelters and women in their cars.

"We must do better to incentivise private home ownership to enable governments to provide social and emergency housing.

"I am also committed to addressing women's economic safety and security. The Women's Economic Equality Taskforce has provided the Government with a set of priorities for the upcoming budget, including:

  1. Reinstatement of the Parenting Payment (Single) for women with children over eight years of age to more appropriately classify single mothers as doing parenting work, rather than as being unemployed.

  2. Abolition of the Parents Next program accompanied by a commitment to reinvest in a new evidence-based program co-designed with young parents to meet their needs.

  3. Payment of Superannuation for primary carers while they are on Paid Parental Leave.

  4. Increasing the rate of Commonwealth Rental Assistance to improve women's immediate housing security.

  5. Invest in an interim pay rise for all early childhood educators and aged care workers.

"Tonight I will be moderating a community forum on Indigenous Voice to Parliament. To attend register at www.jennyware.com.au. You can also email Jenny. Ware.MP@aph.gov.au or call mv office on 9521 6262."
