Vietnam Veterans Day

Vietnam Veterans Day is an important memorial of the brave Australian men and women who fought for our nation in the Vietnam War. The date of Vietnam Veterans Day on 18 August every year marks the day when the Battle of Long Tan begun and stands as the arrival of the 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR). 60,000 Australians fought in this war alongside our allies from the United States of America and New Zealand.

The Battle of Long Tan was one of the most significant battles fought by Australians during the Vietnam War and was also the first major battle fought by Australian troops in Vietnam. On this day, we remember all of the veterans who served in Vietnam and their families, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

It is important to recognise that upon return to Australian shores, our Vietnam War Veterans were vilified for their involvement in the war. This in hindsight was a regretful period, though our nation remains proud of the service these skilful men and women gave to Australia.

I was pleased to be joined in Engadine on Vietnam Veterans Day 2022 by Leader of the Opposition The Hon. Peter Dutton MP. It was here that we heard the stories from our distinguished Vietnam Veterans and provided assurance that Australia is proud and grateful for their service.
