Pathology is the engine room of healthcare, central to medical detection, prevention, treatment, and management.  We all know a lot more about pathology services following the recent pandemic. 

However, 70% of medical decisions rely on information from pathology tests.  For example, every cancer diagnosis is made initially by a pathologist.

John from Pathology Awareness Australia and Ingrid from NSW Health Pathology lead me through a tour of the Pathology department at Sutherland Hospital.

I was provided with active demonstrations of their services which include:

  • Collections

  • Immunology

  • Central Specimen Reception (CSR)

  • Multi-function Laboratory (Haematology, Chemical Pathology and Transfusion)

  • Morphology
